The Particle Plan, Chapel bridge, Lucerne

The Particle Plan, a collaborative project between four Dutch studio’s with various disciplines in the creative industry, developed the winning concept for a permanent interactive light installation that will illuminate the famous Chapel bridge in Lucerne.

The creative team noticed that crossing the bridge is something special. It connects to the history of not only the bridge, but also the city of Lucerne. Crossing the bridge is an act that should be seen from outside, and experienced in a special way while walking over the bridge. With ‘The Particle Plan’ the Chapel bridge becomes a public stage. A stroll over the bridge will generate every time a unique pattern of light on the bridge – illuminating the distinct particles the bridge is constituted of, as a canvas. In this manner we also highlight how the bridge, built in 1333is being kept alive as a concept whilst its hand-crafted parts are continuously being rejuvenated.

The Vitra Design Museum in Weill am Rhein, Germany, is one of the leading design museums in the world and organizes exhibitions and events on design and architecture.

'Lightopia' will be the next exhibition to open on September 28th in the main building by Frank Gehry, which also features the Fragile Future 3.11 work by Ralph Nauta and Lonneke Gordijn.

Currently, new lighting technologies are bringing about profound changes in the domain of artificial lighting. This development is the subject of the Vitra Design Museum’s exhibition »Lightopia«. It is the first comprehensive presentation of lighting design, featuring examples from the realms of art, design, architecture and many other disciplines.

The primary focus of the exhibition is on works by contemporary designers and artists such as Studio Drift, Olafur Eliasson, and Troika, who illustrate the broad scope of new possibilities for designing with light and that emphazise also the archaic and emotional strengths.
